IRAD - Integrated Research Application and Development

Integrated Research Application and Development (IRAD), Pvt. Ltd was registered as a private company on 12 Feb 1992 (as firm no 1741) in Nepal under His Majesty Government of Nepal (HMG Nepal), the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supply by the office of the Company Registrar. The objective of the company is to provide intelligent consultancy services in different development projects in Nepal.

In the past, IRAD has provided consultancy services in planning, survey, design and implementation of engineering projects especially in the field of Roads, Airports, Information Technology, and in Hydro-Power sectors. IRAD has also successfully competed projects with the application of CAD and GIS in different project studies. Apart from this, IRAD has been also involved in the construction supervision of roads and airports. IRAD has developed different types of customized software including GIS.

In this context, the Computerized Planning and Design Model named as Optimum Road Design Model (ORDM) is widely used in the national as well as International Consulting field. This is one of the major engineering software developed by IRAD. The fulltime experts involved in IRAD are Civil Engineers, Transport Experts, System Analysts, Computer Programmers, Sociologists/Economists, GIS Assistants, and CAD Assistants. IRAD is also equipped with instruments, hardware and software, permanent office space (our own infrastructure), vehicles, GIS data, maps and information of multidimensional nature of the country.

IRAD has provided consulting services to several national as well as international organizations like World Bank (WB), UNDP, Asian Development Bank (ADB), DFID (UK), USAID, and other Governmental, semi governmental and Non-Governmental Organizations involved in multi-disciplinary development projects. IRAD was associated in some of the significant project studies in Nepal with other international companies such as: ND LEA, Canada, WSP UK, SMEC, Australia, FINMAP, Finland, and ITECO, Switzerland, etc. More...

ORDM - Optimum Road Design Model

Although, there is a whole range of software available in the commercial market with varying approaches and methods, Optimum Road Design Model (ORDM) is found by many Road Experts to be most suitable for optimum design of both hills and plain terrain. ORDM has an instant cross-sectioning facility that gives an idea of the change level of optimum points once the tentatively designed formation levels on the road profile are determined. Vertical design is carried out based on the landscape theory. The design combination of horizontal and vertical alignment configurations ensures best vehicle performance on the road.

GIS facility has now become popular among many planners including road planners. In this context, ORDM also provides an Engineering GIS facility to store and retrieve the geo-technical and other information stored in the attribute table on location-wise basis. Thus the designer can alter the design result as per his/her field observations and experience depending upon the topography, geology, hydrology, and environmental factors. For hilly roads, retaining/breast wall can be provided for the required section while balancing the earthwork.

ORDM also has a full capability of generating the output design drawings of alignments including cross-sections as per the specific needs. Earthwork quantity will be made available in EXCEL format. ORDM generates setting out data with various parameters of horizontal curves to provide a flexible option for transferring the design drawing into the ground in relation with the Benchmarks. More...

ORDM Features
ORDM has 3D optimization facility (Plan, L-section and X-section) which permits to optimize the design of hill roads on the basis of minimizing the objective function of costs by satisfying the technical constraints.
Details design of walls can also be conducted for critical walls as per the need of the designer. However, the earthwork quantity by considering wall quantity could be generated with exact drawing of walls in such X-sections.
TIN data created by Delaunay Triangulation Method (like: Land Development, CREDO, and others, etc) can be further optimized to increase the accuracy of TIN by making them closer to equilateral. Practical experiments carried on these aspects show that there could be 5 to 15 % increase in the accuracy of these TIN data which will enhance the quality of road plan and design.
Effective editing facilities of TIN are developed to enhance the accuracy and the reliability of TIN surface which can minimize the quantity variation between the design and construction phases.
Hazard assessment can also be carried out on the basis of assigning the ratings of different parameters such as: ground slope, geology, topography, hydrology, and other parameters as well.
